Deployment Story

The Challenge & the Outcome

Netcom Plus replaced an aging MikroTik backbone with IP Infusion OcNOS on Edgecore and UfiSpace hardware, gaining VPLS, Layer 2, BGP, and OSPF support for edge and aggregation routing.

Outcome: Backbone bandwidth scaled from 10-20 Gbps to an upper capacity of 2.4 Tbps, with a plug-and-play upgrade and lower cost than Cisco, SONiC, or Cumulus alternatives.

Netcom Plus, a Venezuelan residential and business network service provider, upgraded its backbone from an aging MikroTik installation to IP Infusion OcNOS running on Edgecore and UfiSpace hardware. The deployment lifted bandwidth capacity from 10-20 Gbps to an upper capacity of 2.4 Tbps and delivered the Service Provider features the operator needed for edge and aggregation routing.

The Challenge

The existing MikroTik configuration could no longer accommodate current service demands or growth, and the underlying hardware and processors had aged out. Netcom Plus needed a modern platform that could carry advanced Service Provider features without forcing a costly lock-in.

Evaluated upgrade paths from Cisco, SONiC, and Cumulus fell short on the capability set Netcom Plus required:

  • VPLS tunnels
  • Layer 2 features
  • BGP and OSPF routing

The Solution

Netcom Plus selected IP Infusion OcNOS SP and deployed it on white-box hardware from Edgecore and UfiSpace. The migration ran plug-and-play directly through IP Infusion, replacing the legacy MikroTik backbone with a disaggregated stack purpose-built for edge and aggregation routing.

Outcomes

  • Backbone bandwidth scaled from 10-20 Gbps to an upper capacity of 2.4 Tbps
  • Service Provider feature parity delivered: VPLS, Layer 2, BGP, OSPF
  • Cost advantage over Cisco, SONiC, and Cumulus alternatives
  • Smooth, plug-and-play upgrade path coordinated through IP Infusion

“It was clear the IP Infusion solution beat out the competition on features alone. When you factor in cost, the choice was obvious,” said Hugo Araujo, CTO for Netcom Plus. “MikroTik is old hardware and software, old processors. OcNOS feels like driving a new car, and the upgrade was plug-and-play directly through IP Infusion.”

Why OcNOS

OcNOS gave Netcom Plus the carrier-grade routing stack it needed on cost-effective open hardware, letting the operator disaggregate the network, streamline operations, and reduce Total Cost of Ownership while keeping room to grow into 2.4 Tbps of backbone capacity.
