DANOS-Vyatta edition NOS is aligned with Open Compute Project in delivering a cell site gateway router (CSGR) use case. As mobile service providers make the transition from legacy technologies toward 5G RAN technologies, the CSGR is designed to address the changing needs of operator’s backhaul  transport requirements.

Based on the DANOS open source software, DANOS-Vyatta edition is a production-ready, carrier grade, feature-rich network operating system (NOS) that meets the demand for functionality and reliability required in the carrier environment.

System Architecture

Highlights of DANOS-Vyatta edition The NOS architecture is designed for abstractions with clean APIs between the layers for development agility, troubleshooting and ease of supporting multiple white boxes. The application layer encompasses all the routing and supporting processes along with the standard APIs and familiar CLI interface for operators and management, automation, orchestration systems to interact with the NOS. The application layer interfaces with the system infrastructure layer, again via modular interfaces. DANOS-Vyatta edition uses standard Linux at its core and this is part of the infrastructure layer as well. Use of Linux comes with all the well-known scripting, tooling capabilities. The forwarding layer’s main role is to interface with the infrastructure layer above for data necessary for forwarding and other functions in a modular way as well as support abstractions necessary to enable easy of ODM integration. The Forwarding Abstraction Layer is the key module that enables rapid qualification of ODMs.

Why DANOS-Vyatta edition

AT&T wants to build a carrier community around a standardized, open source, telco-grade WAN Network Operating System to:

  • Lower operational costs through code reuse and by simplifying onboarding, operation and maintenance of network devices across carrier networks
  • Create opportunities for standardized commodity WAN hardware
  • Foster an ecosystem of innovation where third-party application developers can create value added applications for a common NOS

DANOS-Vyatta edition eases operators’ major pain points by addressing Telco WAN network features and operational models. Network operators are keen on leveraging DVe’s values and advantages. DANOS-Vyatta edition:

  • Provides familiar interface and administration tools to easily fit into existing networks and deployments
  • Has been tested, certified and deployed at scale in production in the AT&T network
  • Proven highly scalable and performant software data plane and support for merchant silicon forwarding
  • Supports multiple deployment models; merchant silicon switching/routing, x86 based CPE, cloud and virtual functions, edge to core
  • Built from the ground up to support Yang/NetConf
  • Well defined APIs to facilitate third party applications
  • Regular binary releases to support the user community

Use Cases

DANOS-Vyatta edition NOS platform is based on the Linux Foundation DANOS open source Network Operating System, the only open source, carrier-focused NOS platform. AT&T has broadly deployed DANOS-Vyatta edition in thousands of devices for both fixed and mobile networks. The following use cases are highly sought by network operators.

  • DANOS-Vyatta edition Cell Site Router— The shipping version of DANOS-Vyatta edition for the Cell Site Router use case aligns with the Open Compute Project Cell Site Router to deliver current and future services including 5G with high bandwidth and low latencies. IP Infusion DANOS-Vyatta edition can be deployed in both current architectures as well as evolving distributed deployment models such as O-RAN* for 5G.
  • DANOS-Vyatta edition Open SD-Edge– Accelerates network disaggregation at the WAN Edge. The Open SD-Edge platform has been optimized for cloud connectivity, at the branch and cloud edges of the network, and delivers operational simplicity, agile, virtualized services at the highest price-performance and lowest total cost of ownership.
