5G This Time it is Different

New network design, more performance, more capacity, greater reach, lower latency all require a big leap to make 5G networks successful. Clearly, this is not a matter of putting in some new switches and routers, adding a few cell towers, and enabling some additional spectrum. And, we can’t ignore the business issues. No carrier wants to go out and replace fifty $200,000 devices with a hundred $500,000 devices to provide 5G in a city. The network has to be bigger, faster, more responsive, etc., and this has to be done incrementally and with technology that has a lower cost profile than current solutions (think of it as a lower cost per Mbps, although it is more complicated than that.)

5G has some really big shoes to fill. Now is the time to make 5G a reality, but remember one size doesn’t fit all.
