SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 7, 2016 – IP Infusion, a leading provider of intelligent network software for telecom and data communications services, today announced that SK Telecom, Korea’s largest telecommunications company, will use the OcNOS network operating system as part of their open networking strategy to deliver enterprise and carrier-grade solutions, which will allow them to reduce network costs, increase flexibility, and to deploy new features and services quickly. In addition to integrating OcNOS as the network operating system for their own networks, SK Telecom will provide its networking solution combined with OcNOS to networking customers.
SK Telecom is creating a converged network appliance (i.e. T-CAP), based on open networking architecture combining a high performance server and a data center scale switch together, as part of their strategy to build modular data center solutions for services at the edge to serve VNF and mobile computing needs. With this approach, the carrier can move service intelligence distributed and closer to the edge of the network, enabling improved service scalability with the same or lower power footprint, data protection and end-to-end encryption. SK Telecom and IP Infusion will also collaborate on creating a virtual/physical solution with SK Telecom’s server-switch appliance that takes advantage of OcNOS to allow them to have one operating system to manage both physical and virtual requirements.
OcNOS is a modular, disaggregated, high-performance network operating system for data center and enterprise networking. The highly available and scalable OcNOS architecture is optimized for both physical and virtual environments, with extensive support for IP/MPLS routing, OpenFlow support, switching, and security. The OcNOS solution helps customers, such as SK Telecom, to create their own network product easily, allowing them to design their network to their specific needs and deploy new services quickly with its comprehensive feature set, carrier-grade quality and flexibility.
“With IP Infusion’s field-proven networking stacks built upon its time-tested networking platform and SDN feature support, the solution will provide faster deployments, reduce operational complexity, and provide greater business agility to our customers,” said Dr. Lee Kang-won, senior vice president of R&D at SK Telecom.
“SK Telecom joins our growing list of customers of all sizes who are taking advantage of how IP Infusion’s OcNOS bundled with the hardware of their choice allows them to keep pace with their evolving high performance network needs and to reduce their time to deploy new services, while lowering costs for Enterprise network operations with a modular, disaggregated network operating system,” said Kiyo Oishi, CEO and president of IP Infusion. “We are proud to work with SK Telecom to deliver solutions that require less time and lower capital and operating expenditures.”
SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM, KSE: 017670), established in 1984, is Korea’s largest telecommunications company with more than 28.9 million mobile subscribers, accounting for around 50% of the market. The company reached KRW 17.137 trillion in revenue in 2015. As the world’s first company to commercialize CDMA, CDMA 2000 1x, CDMA EV-DO and HSDPA networks, SK Telecom launched the nation’s first LTE service in July 2011. SK Telecom also became the world’s first mobile carrier to commercialize 150Mbps LTE-Advanced in June 2013 and 225Mbps LTE-Advanced in June 2014 through Carrier Aggregation (CA). In line with its efforts to swiftly move towards the next-generation mobile network system, or 5G, it successfully commercialized 300Mbps tri-band LTE-A CA. As of the end of March 2016, the company has over 19.53 million LTE and LTE-Advanced subscribers. Based on its strength in network operations business, SK Telecom is seeking new growth engines through three innovative platforms namely Lifestyle Enhancement Platform, Advanced Media Platform and IoT Service Platform.
