Your Virtual Lab, Upgraded: Meet the OcNOS 7.0.0 Demo VM

We are excited to announce the availability of the all-new OcNOS Demo Virtual Machine (VM), encompassing the technical advancements introduced in OcNOS 7.0.0.

The Open Compute Network Operating System (OcNOS) Demo VM provides a hands-on environment for mastering the OcNOS CLI and exploring control plane configurations.

What's New in This Release?

VxLAN Software Forwarding Now on OcNOS Demo VMs

Simulating complex networks is easier than ever with seamless VxLAN Software Forwarding on the OcNOS Demo VM. This groundbreaking update ensures simplified network segmentation. It delivers robust EVPN-VXLAN multi-tenancy capabilities straight to your virtual lab. Validate your software-defined fabrics today without the need for specialized hardware.

Key Highlights of our VxLAN Software Forwarder Support:

  • Comprehensive Bridging & Routing
    • From L2 Bridging with Static VxLAN and EVPN-BGP to advanced L3 Routing with Asymmetric and Symmetric IRB, OcNOS has you covered.
  • Multi-VNID Support
    • Effortlessly manage multiple Virtual Network Identifiers, enabling intricate network designs and efficient resource allocation.
  • Resilient Topologies
    • Whether you're deploying L2 Bridging, L3 Routing, Multi-VNID setups, or robust Leaf-Spine architectures, our solution provides the foundational stability you need.
  • VLAN Bridging Integration
    • Seamlessly integrate existing VLAN infrastructures with VxLAN tunnels for a smooth transition and enhanced network capabilities.

CLI-Script and CLI-Shell Automation

Streamline operational workflows directly from the command line. The new cli-script function allows operators to create and execute script files containing bulk configurations, while the exec-shell command enables the secure execution of Linux bash commands directly from the OcNOS execution mode.

Securing BGP with RPKI

BGP has long been susceptible to routing threats such as prefix hijacking and monkey-in-the-middle attacks. Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI) BGP Origin Validation addresses these vulnerabilities by verifying the originating Autonomous System (AS) for each prefix against Route Origin Authorizations (ROAs) obtained from an external RPKI validator. Starting with OcNOS 7.0.0 this feature is supported on the OcNOS Demo VM, enabling network engineers to evaluate and test RPKI-based route security in a lightweight virtual environment.

OcNOS Demo VM: Control Plane Feature Overview

  • MPLS Control Plane Validation
    • Execute the full lifecycle of label-switched paths by running native MPLS daemons. This framework enables the establishment of LDP sessions, exchange of label bindings, and verification of FEC-to-label mappings. For sophisticated traffic steering, RSVP-TE is available to validate traffic-engineered tunnels, path setup/teardown mechanics, and trunk parameter constraints.
  • Advanced Layer 2 Tooling
    • Verify switching topology resilience through a suite of core Layer 2 protocols. The environment supports VLAN database management, STP/RSTP for loop mitigation, and LLDP for link-layer discovery. It also facilitates the observation of dynamic MAC learning and static MAC configurations to ensure forwarding database (FDB) consistency.
  • Layer 3 Routing Logic
    • Validate robust routing architectures using industry-standard protocols. The Demo VM supports BGP (v4/v6) with peering and policy features, alongside OSPF and IS-IS for comprehensive Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) validation and hierarchical network design.

Who Should Try The Demo VM?

The OcNOS Demo VM is the perfect entry point for:

  • Network Operators and Admins: Experiment with advanced protocols and features in a safe, virtual environment.
  • Developers & Automation Teams: Validate APIs, test scripts, and integrate with network controllers and orchestration platforms.
  • Students & Learners: Gain hands-on experience with production-grade NOS without needing dedicated hardware.
  • Partners & Customers: Quickly validate use cases before getting into production hardware deployments.

Explore OcNOS supported features matrix here. Note that not all the features of OcNOS may be available on Demo VM because of forwarding limitations in the VM.

OcNOS Demo VM is available for popular hypervisors such as KVM, GNS3, VirtualBox and EVE-NG.
