La sfida e il risultato

Vyve Broadband selected IP Infusion OcNOS on Edgecore white box hardware to consolidate three acquired networks into a single aggregation platform carrying voice, video, and data traffic.

Risultato: Vyve is on track to deploy 200 OcNOS nodes, replacing Cisco and Juniper, with quicker deployment cycles and a measurable drop in care-center support calls.

Vyve Broadband, a Multiple-System Operator delivering residential and commercial data, voice, and video service to rural communities, selected IP Infusion OcNOS to upgrade its core network. Vyve replaced an existing NOS installation on Edgecore white box hardware, with New York-based RocNet Supply providing design and testing expertise. The migration is on track to reach 200 OcNOS nodes, replacing Cisco and Juniper gear.

The Challenge

The acquisition of Vyve, Eagle, and Northland Communications left the company operating three disparate networks. Integrating them into a single common infrastructure was critical to support rapid customer growth across high-speed data, video, and voice services. Vyve needed a platform that could bridge the legacy networks, then ultimately replace them, while lowering operating costs and improving network stability.

The Solution

Vyve standardized on OcNOS running on a mix of Edgecore white box hardware, combining voice, video, and data traffic on aggregation routers. RocNet Supply set up a deployment lab with Edgecore hardware running OcNOS to validate the configuration and begin the rollout within three months. According to RocNet CEO Mike Baker, this represented about half the time to revenue typically seen from other vendors.

  • Common OcNOS platform spanning the merged Vyve, Eagle, and Northland networks
  • White box Edgecore hardware in the core, replacing the prior NOS installation
  • RocNet Supply lab validation and standardized deployment plan

Outcomes

Vyve standardized architecture, configuration, procedures, management, documentation, and training on a single platform, which shortened deployment cycles and improved network stability. By the time the rollout reached one-third complete, Vyve recorded a significant drop in support calls to its care centers, which the team attributed to higher network reliability and fewer network-impacting events. The deployment is on track to reach 200 OcNOS nodes, displacing Cisco and Juniper.

  • Quicker deployment cycles on a standardized OcNOS platform
  • Measurable drop in care-center support calls at the one-third mark
  • Path to controller-based segment routing and automation

Why OcNOS

OcNOS gave Vyve the flexibility to convert existing hardware from one NOS provider to OcNOS while gaining the feature sets needed for a service-provider network. As Randy Horn, Vice President of Network Engineering at Vyve Broadband, put it: the transition to a white box core fits the company's distributed, disaggregated network strategy and provides the extensibility to support its automation plans and ultimate goal of controller-based segment routing.

We have realized multiple benefits early, utilizing the flexibility to convert existing hardware from one NOS provider to OcNOS, gaining the necessary feature sets to build a state-of-the-art service-provider network meeting the demands of our rapid growth.
