The Challenge
Citynet is the IT brand of Hall AG, the central municipal services provider for the town of Hall in Tirol, Austria. It serves 5,000 residential and business customers, and bandwidth demand from that mixed base kept climbing while the Cisco network underneath it ran short of headroom.
The upgrade environment was the harder problem. Pandemic-era shortages stretched lead times across the market, and the installed platform offered few upgrade options at prices Citynet was willing to pay.
- Growing bandwidth demand from a mixed residential and business customer base
- Pandemic market shortages limiting hardware availability
- High prices and limited upgrade paths from the existing platform
The Solution
STORDIS GmbH developed and integrated the open networking upgrade that took the Cisco backbone out of service: IP Infusion OcNOS running on Edgecore Networks switches. On features the pairing matched every alternative Citynet evaluated. On practicalities it won outright, because the hardware was in stock immediately and the price was market-competitive.
An industry-standard CLI eased the cutover for the operations team, and OcNOS provided the feature depth required to run a provider backbone serving regional and international businesses.
Risultati
The backbone now runs at 100Gbps across Europe on OcNOS and Edgecore hardware, carrying internet service to residential and business consumers. Two constraints went away with the old platform: Citynet no longer waits on one vendor's stock to add capacity, and it no longer prices growth against an upgrade path it cannot influence.
- Upgraded from Cisco to OcNOS on Edgecore hardware
- 100Gbps backbone serving 5,000 customers
- Open networking platform positioned for future growth
Why OcNOS
Matthias Feistmantl, Senior Network Operations Engineer and Architect for Citynet, summarized the experience: "IP Infusion's industry-standard CLI aided the transition immensely. The OcNOS feature set is extensive, and the product roadmap is compelling and timely. Their great after-sales support was appreciated in aiding the upgrade process."
