Asia Pacific Telecom (APT), a Taiwan-based provider of intelligent living and wireless telecom services, selected IP Infusion to deliver a disaggregated solution for its 5G mobile network. APT is rolling out more than 5,000 Cell Site Routers to serve over 2 million subscribers, supporting next-generation services and IoT connectivity across Taiwan.
The Challenge
APT needed to build a fast, reliable 5G network capable of handling increased data volumes and high-bandwidth cell site backhaul, while avoiding the cost and vendor lock-in associated with traditional integrated networking equipment. The operator also required a path that preserved investment in existing infrastructure as it transitioned from traditional to open networks.
The Solution
APT chose a disaggregated Cell Site Router solution built on OcNOS SP from IP Infusion, white box hardware from UfiSpace, and system integration from Foxconn Global Network Co., Ltd. (FHnet). The NOS is optimized for high performance on merchant silicon and includes advanced switching, routing, and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) capabilities.
- OcNOS SP running on UfiSpace white box CSR hardware
- FHnet delivering system integration services
- Compact, efficient routers designed for simple maintenance at scale
Outcomes
The disaggregated CSR deployment gives APT the headroom to support 5G traffic demands while reducing both CapEx and OpEx through the use of white box hardware and open software. APT gains better control of its network, a broader vendor ecosystem, and the agility to introduce new services as the rollout expands.
- 5,000+ Cell Site Routers planned for deployment across Taiwan
- Service footprint of more than 2 million subscribers
- Seamless transition from traditional networks to open networks with investment protection
Why OcNOS
As JM Chien, Senior Vice President of Asia Pacific Telecom, put it: "As we enter the new era of 5G, we will be able to accelerate network transformation, expand the depth and breadth of 5G applications, and realize more business opportunities in a more flexible manner. We will be leveraging the benefits of IP Infusion's open software platform and white box hardware to gain cost savings and efficiencies in our network."
