Multinet, an information and communications solution provider in Pakistan, selected IP Infusion's OcNOS to upgrade its nationwide transport network to 3.2 Tbps. The deployment spans more than 120 cities and over 14,000 kilometers, serving more than 150 million people. Built on Telecom Infra Project (TIP) solutions, this is the largest Open Optical and Packet Transport project to date.
The Challenge
Multinet needed to expand capacity for exponential demand growth and extend network access to new urban, semi-urban, and rural areas across Pakistan. The operator wanted a future-proof, vendor-neutral architecture with transparent licensing, predictable costs, and the flexibility to integrate with existing infrastructure.
The Solution
Multinet deployed OcNOS together with Cassini, TIP's disaggregated coherent switch and open packet transponder built by Edgecore Networks. Cassini offers a flexible mix of 100 Gigabit Ethernet packet switching ports and 100/200 Gbps coherent optical interfaces, supporting data center interconnect and service provider backhaul use cases.
- OcNOS network operating system on white box disaggregated hardware
- Cassini coherent packet transponder from Edgecore Networks
- TIP Open Optical ecosystem partner SmartOptics
- STARCOM Technologies (Pvt) Limited as local systems integrator in Pakistan
Outcomes
The long-haul deployment greatly expands capacity, lifting the network to 3.2 Tbps using TIP Open Optical solutions. The disaggregated design lets Multinet roll out high-speed network services at scale while building a vendor-neutral connectivity network that can integrate with what is already in the ground.
- Nationwide footprint: 120+ cities, 14,000+ kilometers, 150+ million people served
- Capacity scaled to 3.2 Tbps on the long-haul backbone
- Open Optical Framework deployment at national scale
Why OcNOS
Adnan Zaidi, Chief Operating Officer of Multinet, said OcNOS was the clear choice to future-proof the network: "IP Infusion's highly rated disaggregated architecture, open and complete transparency on all network element requirements, competitive pricing and simplified licensing are integral to advancing connectivity solutions across Pakistan." OcNOS provides a scalable transition from traditional networks to open networks, with the disaggregation features needed to expand capacity alongside the TIP Cassini solution.
