NWPS and IP Infusion Deliver Carrier-Grade ISP-Independent Connectivity for Swiss Critical Healthcare

Swiss network engineering firm NWPS built a greenfield BGP multihoming network on OcNOS SP to keep a Swiss hospital online with carrier-grade resilience. The deployment runs OcNOS SP IP-BASE on UfiSpace S9600-72XC routers fitted with OP2 external TCAM, holds the full global routing table in hardware, and has recorded no outages in ten months of production. It lands at roughly 60% lower CapEx than a comparable proprietary offer, with no recurring software fees.

The Challenge

Internet connectivity for a hospital cannot fail. NWPS needed to remove single-ISP dependency for a Swiss critical-healthcare customer and stand up dual-stack BGP multihoming from day one. The platform had to carry the full IPv4 and IPv6 global routing table in hardware, match the feature depth of traditional vendors, and fit a budget that made the business case work.

The Solution

NWPS selected OcNOS SP IP-BASE running on UfiSpace S9600-72XC routers with OP2 external TCAM at the core and aggregation layer. The design carries more than 1.27 million routes in hardware and supports dual-stack IPv4 and IPv6 from day one.

  • OcNOS SP IP-BASE on UfiSpace S9600-72XC with OP2 external TCAM
  • Dual-stack BGP multihoming for ISP-independent connectivity
  • Core and aggregation roles on a single open networking stack

Outcomes

  • No recorded outages across ten months of production operation
  • Full global routing table (1.27M+ routes) held in hardware
  • Approximately 60% lower CapEx than a comparable proprietary offer
  • No recurring software fees
  • Single-ISP risk eliminated for a critical-healthcare workload

Why OcNOS

“When you are building internet infrastructure for a hospital, failure is simply not an option. OcNOS gave us the carrier-grade feature set and hardware performance to deliver exactly that, at a price point that made the business case undeniable. This is what open networking looks like when it is done right,” said Lino Moragon, Co-CEO, NWPS.

“From a technical standpoint, OcNOS checked every box: full BGP table in hardware, dual-stack from day one, and a feature set that holds up against the traditional vendors. What we did not expect was how smooth the after-sales experience would be,” said Markus Wellauer, Co-CEO, NWPS.

Tier-1 Carrier-Neutral Interconnection Provider Powers IPoDWDM Backbone with OcNOS

A Tier-1 carrier-neutral interconnection provider selected OcNOS SP PLUS on UfiSpace platforms to power a global IPoDWDM backbone built for AI and ML traffic. The deployment collapses IP and optical layers into a single platform, delivers 14.4 Tbps per system, and preserves deterministic performance for latency-sensitive services.

Fiber Provider Premium Choice Broadband Modernizes Core Network With IP Infusion

Premium Choice Broadband, a Maine-based fiber services provider headquartered in Brewer, modernized its core network with IP Infusion OcNOS SP running on UfiSpace open hardware. The upgrade replaced an existing Cisco core router and shifted Premium Choice toward a disaggregated networking strategy that supports its mission of bridging the digital divide across rural Maine.

The Challenge

Founded in 2007 and part of the Varney family of companies, Premium Choice Broadband has grown from five broadcast locations around Bangor to more than 67 sites covering roughly 7,000 square miles between Rockwood and Surry. The operator delivers fiber-to-the-home, DSL, cable, and wireless services to over 5,000 Maine families and businesses across Hancock, Penobscot, and Piscataquis counties.

To keep pace with that footprint, Premium Choice needed to upgrade an aging Cisco core router and, in a follow-on project, replace a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Infinity supporting a statewide fiber ring. Budget pressure and the cost of traditional rip-and-replace upgrades made the existing vendor path unattractive.

The Solution

Premium Choice selected IP Infusion OcNOS SP on UfiSpace white box hardware for both projects:

  • Initial deployment: OcNOS-SP-IPBASE-2400 on the UfiSpace S9600-72XC aggregation router, a disaggregated platform built for 5G and broadband applications with up to 2.4 Tbps of switching capacity.
  • Second phase: OcNOS-SP-IPBASE-800 on UfiSpace S9510-28DC hardware to connect a fiber ring around the state of Maine, providing an easy path to 400G ports.
  • Optics: Premium Choice sourced interconnect optics from E.C.I. Networks to link the OcNOS routers.

Outcomes

The initial deployment succeeded on its own terms and gave Premium Choice the confidence to begin the second upgrade phase around the statewide fiber ring. Because the new core runs as software on open hardware, future capacity and feature upgrades arrive as low-impact software updates rather than wholesale equipment swaps.

  • Replaced an outdated Cisco core router with a disaggregated OcNOS SP and UfiSpace stack.
  • Positioned the network for 400G port expansion as the fiber ring buildout continues.
  • Reduced exposure to vendor-dictated upgrade cycles by separating software from hardware.

Why OcNOS

“The immediate availability of upgrade equipment, the robustness of the software, and, of course, the paradigm-changing price, made our upgrade choice relatively obvious,” said Andy Breda, Network Manager of Premium Choice Broadband. “Network disaggregation and smart software not only make today’s performance sufficient for any modern application, but upgrades in the future will consist of low-impact software updates versus the rip-and-replace strategy other vendors require.”
