eww ITandTEL: Modernizing a Sovereign MPLS Backbone With OcNOS 400G ZR+ Switches

eww ITandTEL, one of Austria’s premier IT and telecommunications value-added service providers, upgraded its MPLS backbone with IP Infusion’s OcNOS-SP-PLUS. The Alpine provider advanced from 100G to a 400G IP over DWDM (IPoDWDM) architecture, deploying 400G ZR+ coherent transceiver-based circuits across a multi-vendor whitebox environment in partnership with distributor EPS Global.

The Challenge

With more than 30 years operating secure data centers and extensive fiber infrastructure, eww ITandTEL needed a backbone that could scale with customer demand while controlling cost. Legacy chassis systems imposed vendor lock-in and limited the operator’s ability to keep pace with bandwidth growth across its Austrian footprint.

  • Scale beyond 100G without inheriting proprietary chassis constraints
  • Collapse IP and optical layers to simplify operations
  • Preserve sovereign, reliable service for regional customers

The Solution

eww ITandTEL selected OcNOS running on high-performance whitebox platforms from UfiSpace (S9600-56DX, S9510-28DC) and Edgecore (AS7946-30XB). The disaggregated design pairs OcNOS-SP-PLUS with 400G ZR+ coherent optics to deliver IPoDWDM in a single layer. EPS Global, a value-added distributor and system-integration partner, sourced, configured, and delivered components on schedule using its global distribution network and supply-chain logistics.

Outcomes

The new 400G backbone gives eww ITandTEL the control, visibility, and operational efficiency to keep services stable and ahead of demand. By decoupling software from hardware, the operator avoids traditional chassis lock-in, maximizes bandwidth and resiliency, and positions the network for long-term regional growth.

  • Migrated from 100G to a 400G IPoDWDM backbone
  • Deployed 400G ZR+ coherent circuits across a multi-vendor whitebox fabric
  • Reduced total cost of ownership through open networking disaggregation

Christoph Ehmayer, Team Lead Network/System Engineer, eww ITandTEL: “The shift to an open, OcNOS-driven 400G IPoDWDM backbone gives us the control, visibility, and operational efficiency we need to keep our services consistently stable and ahead of demand.”

Why OcNOS

OcNOS lets eww ITandTEL run a sovereign, high-capacity network on standards-based whitebox hardware. The platform supports 400G ZR+ IPoDWDM, multi-vendor deployments, and the operational simplicity needed to deliver end-to-end IT services made in Austria.

IzarLink: Scaling Regional Connectivity With OcNOS Open Networking

The Challenge

IzarLink serves professional and public-sector customers across the French Basque Country: Pays Basque, Béarn and Landes. It delivers high-performance connectivity, secure data exchange, and infrastructure services, and demand for all three was rising faster than its legacy data center core could absorb.

  • Increase data center core capacity beyond the legacy Arista DCS7148-SX platform
  • Keep the ISO 27001 and HDS (Health Data Hosting) certifications in force through the upgrade
  • Eliminate vendor lock-in and gain hardware independence
  • Reduce long-term total cost of ownership across the next decade

The Solution

IzarLink selected OcNOS to power a resilient EVPN-VXLAN core that interconnects its data centers and peering locations. The design lifts 25G access ports into a 100G core built with redundancy, and it supports BGP, OSPF, multi-homing, and real-time streaming telemetry. A simple licensing model keeps the software independent of the hardware it runs on.

Pine Networks, the system integrator on the project, managed the integration and translated IzarLink’s design goals into a production-ready deployment that coexists with the operator’s existing Cisco and MikroTik infrastructure.

Outcomes

Replacing the Arista DCS7148-SX switches cost IzarLink none of its accreditation: ISO 27001 and HDS compliance carried through the upgrade, which is what keeps regulated health data on the platform. Hardware independence also changes the economics, because IzarLink can now time capacity purchases to its own plan rather than a vendor’s refresh cycle.

  • Carrier-grade scalability and stability in the data center core
  • A redundant 100G core serving 25G access, with EVPN-VXLAN, BGP, OSPF, multi-homing, and streaming telemetry
  • Hardware independence and freedom from single-vendor lock-in
  • Significantly lower long-term TCO compared with legacy vendors
  • Continued compliance with ISO 27001 and HDS regulatory standards

Why OcNOS

“IP Infusion OcNOS provided the technical depth and improved network economics that enabled us to timely upgrade our data center core with future-proof scale, security, and resilience,” said Alexis Guirlé, CEO of IzarLink. Hadi Choueiry, General Manager of Pine Networks, added that the project combined local integration expertise with OcNOS to deliver a resilient, future-proof data center core built around long-term service quality.

VA Telecom Transforms Telecommunications With Advanced Open Networking Solutions From IP Infusion And Pine Networks

The Challenge

Subscriber growth had outpaced the legacy MikroTik CCR routers carrying VA Telecom’s backbone. The French operator, which sells to business customers, needed a platform that could hold BGP, MPLS, and VRF functions in service at the same time, reliably, while keeping cost of ownership predictable over a ten-year horizon. VA Telecom evaluated competing solutions from Nokia and Juniper, weighing scalability, operational simplicity, long-term support, and total cost of ownership before it committed.

The Solution

VA Telecom selected OcNOS and deployed it on UfiSpace platforms in two router roles. The backbone spans six data centers in three cities: Nantes, Paris, and Metz.

  • MPLS Provider Edge routers running on UfiSpace S9510-28DC
  • BGP border routers running on UfiSpace S9600-72XC

The platform delivers SR-MPLS, EVPN, LDP, VPLS, L3VPN, full IPv4 and IPv6 BGP routing, double VLAN stacking, advanced QoS, and SNMP and streaming telemetry for network monitoring. Those functions carry the operator’s revenue services: internet access, fixed and mobile telephony, MPLS VPN site interconnection, and BGP peering and transit. Pine Networks led the phased migration, using standard BGP, OSPF, and MPLS protocols so interoperability with legacy systems held while traffic moved over.

Outcomes

The migration retired the operator’s entire MikroTik CCR routing estate and consolidated hardware as it went. BGP, MPLS, and VRF functions now run concurrently and stay stable, and perpetual licensing alongside long product lifecycles pulls down the 10-year cost of ownership rather than resetting it at every license renewal. Buying hardware and software separately removes vendor lock-in and keeps the next platform decision open.

Support runs on two levels: IP Infusion provides 24/7 global coverage and Pine Networks contributes local expertise, so VA Telecom has a nearby first point of contact with round-the-clock backing behind it.

Why OcNOS

“VA Telecom’s successful deployment of OcNOS demonstrates the power of open networking to deliver scalable, cost-effective, and high-performance solutions,” said Jérôme Richard, CTO, VA Telecom. “We are proud to partner with IP Infusion and Pine Networks to drive innovation and efficiency in the telecommunications sector.”

DIGI Group deploys OcNOS for OLT aggregation

The Challenge

DIGI Group is the largest telecommunications provider in Romania, and it was scaling rapidly into four more European markets: Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Belgium. Millions of customers already relied on its services.

A traditional single-vendor stack would have forced DIGI to accept that vendor’s price, roadmap, and supply timeline across the entire footprint. The operator needed an OLT aggregation strategy that could scale internationally, adapt to per-market service requirements, and stay economical as new sites came online.

The Solution

DIGI selected IP Infusion’s OcNOS DC and OcNOS SP to run its OLT aggregation layer, deployed on white box hardware from UfiSpace and Edgecore. One network operating system across mixed hardware gives DIGI a uniform operational model regardless of which switch SKU sits in any given country.

  • OcNOS DC and OcNOS SP on white box hardware
  • UfiSpace and Edgecore platforms in the same deployment
  • OLT aggregation running in all five markets
  • A single NOS unifying ownership and operations across mixed silicon

Outcomes

The commercial gain is leverage: DIGI can price two qualified hardware vendors against each other, on cost and on lead time, without changing how the network is run. The operational gain is that a platform refresh in one country is no longer a migration, because the operating system and the switch underneath it move on separate schedules.

  • Competitive hardware sourcing, because a second qualified platform is always available
  • Each market tuned to local service needs without forking the operating system
  • Software lifecycles decoupled from hardware lifecycles across the whole footprint
  • An aggregation layer that scales with continued international expansion

Why OcNOS

“IP Infusion has delivered great results in terms of cost optimization, operational flexibility, and multi-vendor support. DIGI operates in Romania, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Belgium, providing state-of-the-art services to millions of customers. Our rapid expansion is underpinned by advanced, scalable and reliable networking solutions capable of adapting to the specific needs of each market,” said Valentin Popoviciu, Executive Director of DIGI Communications.

NTT and IP Infusion Announce 400G IOWN Network Solution

The Challenge

Data center traffic continues to climb as generative AI and machine learning workloads scale, driving power consumption into the realm of social concern. Operators need low-cost ways to build high-speed links between data centers and distribute compute, while holding energy use down.

Traditional high-speed data center interconnects rely on tightly integrated network devices with a limited set of optical transceiver options. That model constrains investment efficiency and pushes operators toward open networking, where software and hardware are sourced separately and the optics remain a free choice.

The Solution

NTT works with eight partners, IP Infusion among them, on the IOWN Network Solution (400G). It provides a switch and router capable of long-distance 400Gbps transmission, built from three independent layers:

  • Network OS: software combining NTT and ACCESS/IP Infusion technologies, including the Beluganos OS that NTT developed together with IP Infusion.
  • White box switches and routers: hardware from Edgecore, UfiSpace, and other partners, with Broadcom silicon.
  • 400G ZR/ZR+ optical transceivers: open-standard optics from FOC and NEC, equipped with NTT Innovative Devices’ Photonics-Electronics Convergence devices for low-power, stable transmission.

Customers can mix and match validated combinations of OS, white box, and optics to fit their requirements. Integrating transponder functions inside the switch and router cuts procurement and maintenance costs, power draw, rack space, and construction lead time.

Outcomes

  • The solution targets a 50% reduction in the construction and operation costs of network equipment, measured against the tightly integrated devices it displaces.
  • It targets a 40% reduction in power consumption, which answers the energy question data center operators now face publicly.
  • Inter-data-center links get simpler and cheaper to run, with 400G ZR/ZR+ carrying high-speed traffic over long distances and no separate transponder shelf to buy, power, or maintain.
  • NTT-AT and IP Infusion sell the platform and deliver it one-stop, from construction through 24/7 maintenance and operation.

Why OcNOS

OcNOS gives NTT a production-grade network OS that runs across multiple white box platforms and supports the IPoDWDM and 400G ZR/ZR+ use cases central to the IOWN vision. As Takehiko Kawazoe, Senior Executive Vice President at NTT, put it: “By implementing IOWN, which is a next-generation communication platform with high capacity, low latency, and low-power consumption, we will contribute to realize a well-being society.”

Prosoluce Chooses Open Networking For Core Network Upgrade

Prosoluce, a regional internet, cloud, and managed services provider in France, upgraded its core backbone from 10G to a 100G open networking platform running IP Infusion OcNOS on Edgecore hardware. The new IP backbone uses EVPN-VXLAN to deliver multi-site and multi-tenant services, while interoperating with the operator’s existing Alcatel Lucent, Huawei, MikroTik, and Ubiquiti equipment. Open networking systems integrator Pine Networks guided the migration.

The Challenge

Growing customer demand was outpacing what Prosoluce’s 10G backbone could deliver, and the existing platform faced upgrade limitations. The operator wanted a modern IP backbone based on EVPN-VXLAN to support multi-site and multi-tenant services, without being locked into a single traditional vendor.

Any replacement had to interoperate with the operator’s installed base, which included:

  • Alcatel Lucent
  • Huawei
  • MikroTik
  • Ubiquiti

The Solution

Prosoluce evaluated traditional vendor proposals and refurbished options before selecting disaggregated open networking with IP Infusion. OcNOS runs on 100G Edgecore Networks hardware, and Pine Networks led the design and deployment as the integrator specializing in open, disaggregated, and virtualized solutions. Support from both IP Infusion and Pine Networks was decisive as Prosoluce refined its requirements.

Outcomes

The upgrade addressed several priorities in one project:

  • A 100G backbone built on EVPN-VXLAN, replacing the prior 10G platform
  • Interoperability with the operator’s existing multi-vendor estate
  • Lower cost compared with the traditional and refurbished alternatives evaluated
  • No lock-in to a single traditional vendor

Gael Hermet, Directeur General for Prosoluce, said: “Prosoluce’s upgrade to open networking solved several problems at once. We valued Pine Networks’ recommendation for open networking to avoid single traditional vendor lock-in. IP Infusion software allowed for increased compatibility and performance while lowering costs.”

Why OcNOS

OcNOS gave Prosoluce a feature-rich upgrade path that supports EVPN-VXLAN for multi-site, multi-tenant service delivery, and runs on standards-based Edgecore hardware. Combined with Pine Networks’ integration work, the disaggregated approach delivered the compatibility, performance, and cost profile the operator needed for its next phase of growth.

Madeo’s Open Networking Transition For Data Center

Madeo Consultant, a software provider and data center systems integrator based in France, replaced its Cisco Nexus 3048 and Catalyst 3750 switches with IP Infusion OcNOS running on Edgecore and UfiSpace hardware. The transition supports Madeo’s cloud networking software as a service business and gives the team EVPN VxLAN, public BGP, and Data Center Interconnect on a disaggregated stack.

The Challenge

Madeo Consultant delivers cloud networking software as a service to its client base, and rising demand called for a refresh of the underlying switching estate. The team evaluated several network disaggregation strategies, including SONiC and open networking hardware, alongside continuing with Cisco. Two requirements stood out:

  • Comprehensive BGP support for a public BGP router role with transit partners.
  • EVPN VxLAN features to enable a modern Data Center Interconnect use case.

SONiC did not provide the BGP features Madeo needed, and the team wanted a more mature market option than a pure community build.

The Solution

Madeo selected OcNOS as an alternative to both Cisco and SONiC. The deployment uses OcNOS DC and OcNOS SP packages, with the Service Provider package supplying the standard BGP features critical to the transit-router role. OcNOS runs on Edgecore and UfiSpace white-box hardware, replacing the incumbent Cisco Nexus 3048 and Catalyst 3750 switches.

  • Core network switching and public BGP routing on OcNOS.
  • Data Center Interconnect built on EVPN VxLAN.
  • Edgecore and UfiSpace hardware sourced independently of the NOS vendor.
  • Industry-familiar command line interface for an easy operator transition.

Outcomes

OcNOS gave Madeo the EVPN VxLAN capability and optics flexibility it needed for higher performance, while keeping operational habits intact through a familiar CLI. Simple product licensing from IP Infusion kept the upgrade experience straightforward, and decoupling software from hardware let Madeo shop for a custom-fit platform at an off-the-rack cost.

“We are now delivering software as a service more efficiently, thanks to the increased performance and future-proofing achieved with IP Infusion’s solution.” : François Defrocourt, Solutions Engineer, Madeo Consultant.

Why OcNOS

For Madeo, OcNOS combined a mature feature set with the freedom of open networking. The OcNOS SP and OcNOS DC packages covered both the data center fabric and the public BGP transit role in a single software family, and the choice of Edgecore and UfiSpace hardware removed single-vendor lock-in from the upgrade path.

Scott Data Deploys Network Disaggregation with IP Infusion OcNOS Data Center

The Challenge

Scott Data runs a 20-acre campus in Omaha, Nebraska holding 110,000 square feet of purpose-built, Tier III certified data center space, a 20-MegaWatt central plant, high-density cabinets, and colocation services. It is one of only fourteen multi-tenant organizations in the nation to hold Tier III Certification in both design and facility from the Uptime Institute. The network had to meet the same concurrently maintainable standard as the building, and it had to do that without the procurement and cost drag of a legacy single-vendor stack.

  • Long equipment lead times from closed-system vendors slowed network buildouts.
  • Required budgets for traditional vendor solutions were significantly higher than open alternatives.
  • The roadmap called for a logical evolution from mainframe computing toward future cloud computing.

The Solution

Scott Data picked OcNOS and an open networking strategy to serve the network it has and the growth it expects. One operating system now spans merchant-silicon platforms built by UfiSpace, Edgecore Networks, and Celestica, in place of the closed stacks the campus would otherwise have bought. Technology partner IP ArchiTechs provided essential deployment support, and the architecture matches Scott Data’s wider intent to keep the network open so cost, support, and features all stay negotiable.

Outcomes

  • Buildouts move at project speed. Switches that once took years to arrive now land in weeks, so a new cabinet row or a capacity bump is scheduled against customer demand instead of a vendor backlog.
  • Budget freed for capacity. Closed-system proposals came in at a multiple of the open design, and the difference buys ports and redundancy inside the same spend.
  • Supplier risk spread across three vendors. Because UfiSpace, Edgecore Networks, and Celestica hardware all run the same operating system, one roadmap change or one shortage cannot stall the campus.
  • Ready for the next platform shift. The same network carries Scott Data from mainframe computing toward the cloud computing services on its roadmap, with no second migration to fund.

Why OcNOS

As Ken Moreano, Co-Founder, President, and CEO of Scott Data, put it: “OcNOS and an open networking strategy hits all the right notes in terms of cost, support, and features. Service providers and OEMs have been using IP Infusion for years.” The selection reaffirms Scott Data’s stated core values of being a technical innovator in its market while channeling net revenues toward STEM college scholarships, a defining feature of the company founded by Walter Scott, Jr.

NTT DATA and IP Infusion Partner to Accelerate Network Disaggregation

NTT DATA, a global IT and business services leader headquartered in Tokyo, partnered with IP Infusion to bring disaggregated open networking solutions to network operators. The strategic partnership pairs NTT DATA’s systems integration reach with IP Infusion’s OcNOS software portfolio across a broad selection of white box hardware, giving operators greater scalability and supplier choice.

The Challenge

Network operators want to move away from vertically integrated, single-vendor stacks toward open, standards-based architectures that lower total cost of ownership and broaden the supply chain. Delivering that shift at carrier scale requires more than software: it calls for a systems integrator that can package hardware, software, and services into deployable solutions.

The Solution

NTT DATA selected IP Infusion as a strategic partner to take open networking solutions to market on white box hardware. The collaboration was initiated through the Telecom Infra Project (TIP), where both companies are members, and aligns with TIP work on Disaggregated Cell Site Gateways (DCSG) and the Cassini routed optical networking project.

Under the partnership, NTT DATA offers IP Infusion software products as standalone or bundled solutions, including:

  • Cell Site Routers built on the DCSG specification
  • Routed Optical Networking based on the TIP Cassini project
  • Aggregation Router solutions
  • Data Center networking software, including OcNOS DC and OcNOS SP

Outcomes

“We are deeply committed to accelerating network disaggregation throughout our global ecosystem of customers and partners,” said Teodoro López Palacios, Partner, Telecom Sector at NTT DATA Europe and LATAM. “IP Infusion is a proven leader in open networking, providing award-winning and field-tested solutions that reduce total cost of ownership while expanding services.”

The alliance gives joint customers:

  • A broader portfolio of disaggregated solutions spanning access, aggregation, routed optical, and data center
  • Choice of white box hardware paired with field-tested OcNOS software
  • Lower total cost of ownership compared with traditional integrated network platforms
  • A stronger, more flexible supply chain backed by TIP-aligned standards

Why IP Infusion

IP Infusion’s OcNOS platform lets operators disaggregate their networks, streamline operations, and reduce total cost of ownership. TIP recognized IP Infusion’s DCSG solution with the TIP Validated Solution Gold Badge in 2022 for meeting the requirements set by the TIP Open Optical Packet Transport (OOPT) group, making it a natural fit for NTT DATA’s open-networking go-to-market.
