London Internet Exchange (LINX) will use IP Infusion’s OcNOS™ network operating system in their secondary London interconnect platform (LON2). After months of research and testing with new suppliers, LINX will adopt a disaggregated format for LON2 by leveraging the NOS from IP Infusion and the hardware from Edgecore Networks.
LINX, one of the largest operators of Internet Exchange Point (IXP) services connecting over 700 networks in over 65 countries, also announced that it will build the new LON2 architecture based on EVPN (Ethernet VPN) routing technology. The LINX solution, employing EVPN over MPLS, leaf-spine topology, full automation and100G ready, is the first IXP in the world to adopt all of these new technology concepts and features.

In the last newsletter we featured the first part of a blog post which looked at the building blocks and the ecosystem behind the open networking or disaggregated model. This month let’s examine the tradeoffs between choosing a traditional vendor vs. a white box network and the potential applications using this model. This post covers cost saving vs. flexibility, expanding or scaling the network, the choice of NOS, applications of white box, and evolving models.
Today’s businesses need fluid networks which are open to changes in hardware and software and enables services on-demand. Network decision makers can reduce cost, improve management and enable long-term innovation using “white-box” switches versus traditional networking approaches. However, white-box networking may not be for everyone in the immediate term but given that the model will mature over time with better multi-vendor interoperability it does offer a credible alternative in the long term to traditional vendor networking switches.
