Media Global Links

Media Global Links
The world's first television station to deploy 100% IP-based video routing solution is using Media Global Links' IP Video Router powered by IP Infusion's ZebOS® Network Platform.

The Customer
Established in 1993, Media Global Links Co., Ltd. (MGL), headquartered in Kawasaki, Japan, is a leading developer and manufacturer of broadcast network infrastructure technology. MGL provides the technology of choice to transport high definition signals reliably over contribution and primary distribution networks. MGL offers network broadcasters and service providers a unique solution to convert and move video onto a multi-service network, supporting the adaptation of video to Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH), Synchronous optical networking (SONET), 270 Mb and Internet Protocol (IP) networks. MGL's solutions have been used extensively in major global broadcasting events, including supporting the real time broadcasting of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cups and the Olympics.

The Challenge
In early 2008, MGL was awarded a contract from Fuji Television Network, Inc., one of the major television networks in Japan, to develop a first-of-its-kind video routing solution to be installed at Fuji TV's new network operations center in Tokyo, Japan. This operations center will make Fuji TV the world's first television station to deploy a fully IP-based internal and external video routing solution for coverage of events such as the Formula One Grand Prix.

To complement their expertise in broadcasting, MGL needed to partner with an advanced networking solutions company to develop and implement an IP video routing device with stable and high quality Layer 2 networking features.

The Solution
MGL chose IP Infusion Inc. to bring the networking solutions and the professional services experience needed to implement the advanced networking features of the Video Router system.

Using the ZebOS Advanced Platform (now branded the ZebOS Network Platform), IP Infusion met MGL's challenge to support critical data transactions in the broadcasting infrastructure and to speed MGL's time-tomarket. At the core of the system is the world's largest IP video router in a single chassis, the MGL MD10000. The Video Router handles both conventional video streams and advanced media files of many types, including the next generation Material eXchange Format (MXF) files that are increasingly used in high-quality video production. MGL has chosen to incorporate IP Infusion's ZebOS software with the MD10000 IP Video Router to provide Layer 2 switching. This integration allows the MD10000 to provide a highly secure and reliable transport system, satisfying Fuji TV's requirements and delivering the world's largest IP video router in a single chassis.

The Media Global Links' MD10000 non-blocking Ethernet switch with 160 10Gbit/s ports is the centerpiece of Fuji TV's IP/Ethernet network and will convey high definition video and data streams between studios, data centers, control rooms and sites of live action. This network is capable of switching up to 800 uncompressed HDTV video streams simultaneously. This MD10000 IP Video Router interconnects Fuji's TV headquarters, affiliates and studios using 10 Gbps (gigabits per second) circuits at a capacity of 3.2 Tbps (terabits per second).

The architectural strength of IP Infusion's ZebOS offers the scalability to address leading-edge requirements in the areas of carrier-class Ethernet, high availability and Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) multicasting. Combined with IP Infusion's professional services that further accelerate time-to-market and feature agility for equipment provider customers, IP Infusion enabled Media Global Links to deliver a highly secure and reliable transport system satisfying broadcasters' stringent requirements. The combination of the ZebOS software with expert professional services provided cost savings in MGL's porting and development efforts.

MGL's decision to incorporate IP Infusion's ZebOS not only offers a more cost-effective solution, but also made Fuji TV the world's first television station to deploy a fully IP-based internal and external video routing solution.
